Review : Jazz City Diner - the sequel

Jazz City Diner

238 Crown St.
Darlinghurst

Lunch Tue-Fri 12pm to 2.30pm

Dinner Wed-Sat 6pm to 10pm
Brunch Sat 10am to 2pm
Closed Sun & Mon

As our first visit to Jazz City Diner wasn't entirely successful and seeing a couple of months have passed,  we decide to pop in for Saturday brunch to see if things have improved.
Well the answer is yes....
and no.

A couple of things we notice straight away...the milkshakes are now a whopping $10 (up from $6) and the floats a hefty $8.
Also, the poached egg options have reduced from five down to two & the pie selection from four to two.

We decide to kick things of with a 'Float' each, I opt for Root Beer while Buggles goes with Coke.
They arrive and we are a little taken aback....this is costing us $8, couldn't we at least have the remainder of the bottle/can to top up our floats?? There is barely any liquid in here!!!!
Maybe they don't open a $4 bottle of coke for the $8 float, perhaps they just pour from a 2 litre bottle they have in the fridge...would certainly explain why the coke in Buggles' float is flat...

Let's just say they don't float our boat!

The burgers, when they arrive, are very good. Well, mine is very good. I love the combination of mushrooms, caramelised onions & blue cheese, sitting on top of the thick, juicy square of beef. I love blue cheese and the flavour is very prominent on this burger, so it is absolute winner with me.

Buggles is a little disappointed with her cheeseburger, too much healthy stuff & just not enough cheese....she loves the pickle relish though.

The accompanying buttermilk onion rings are very, very good & we could eat a truckload of these. They are lightly battered, crunchy & not at all greasy.

We are feeling pretty full at this point so decide to share (unusual for me), the Pecan Pie. The pastry is short  & buttery, the gooey centre (I prefer mine with a bourbon hit) is not too sweet and there is a good topping of pecans.

We really want to love Jazz City Diner as the food is very good and in the case of the burgers, good value. The Cheeseburger is $14 & the Mushroom & Caramelised Onion Burger is $16.

The Milkshake at $10 is ridiculously priced....it is just milk (and not that much of it) after all, with either fresh fruit (at best) or syrup.
Ditto the Float.

The service, while far better than our last visit, is still a little clumsy; e.g. we are presented with the bill the moment we finish our burgers without being asked if we want dessert. Also as the chef collects our empty plates I comment that the burgers are 'delicious', he does not feel inclined to respond.

I was so keen to get a milkshake here - until I saw the price. There's something not quite right there - even if they are using premium ice cream etc.

Glad to see you returned, but seeing the experience this time is only slightly better than the last, will you return?

I'm loving the complaint about the cheeseburger being too healthy! LOL

@Tina I know $10 is ridiculous...we were quite stunned when we saw the price. I wonder how many they sell?

@joey I really do love the food here, but the service really does let it down. Buggles doesn't love it enough to return, so I might have to go solo!

We don't want to muck about with lettuce & tomato on a cheeseburger...we want cheese & lots of it.

The milkshake is pricey indeed but good to hear that the burgers are worth it! I do love a good burger! :)
